Horcruxes var ett ganska obskilt ämne, även bland Dark wizards.

Även om Snape hade ett intresse för Dark Arts, är Horcruxes inte ett vanligt ämne i Dark Arts. När Hermione söker böckerna i det begränsade avsnittet, ger ingen av dem information om Horcruxes, och endast en av dem nämnde även Horcruxes.

“I haven’t found one single explanation of what Horcruxes do!’ she told him. ‘Not a single one! I’ve been right through the restricted section and even in the most horrible books, where they tell you how to brew the most gruesome potions – nothing! All I could find was this, in the introduction to Magick Moste Evile – listen – “of the Horcrux, wickedest of magical inventions, we shall not speak nor give direction” … I mean, why mention it, then?’ she said impatiently, slamming the old book shut; it let out a ghostly wail. ‘Oh, shut up,’ she snapped, stuffing it back into her bag.”

Dumbledore förväntade sig emellertid inte Death Eaters, åtminstone varav några skulle vara så kunniga i Dark Arts som Snape, om inte mer sedan Snape defekterades tidigt, att veta om Horcruxes eller se ut att mörkret Herren hade gjort dem från vad han hade sagt.

“Then you told me, two years later, that on the night that Voldemort returned to his body, he made a most illuminating and alarming statement to his Death Eaters. “I, who have gone further than anybody along the path that leads to immortality.” That was what you told me he said. “Further than anybody.” And I thought I knew what that meant, though the Death Eaters did not. He was referring to his Horcruxes, Horcruxes in the plural, Harry, which I do not believe any other wizard has ever had.”

Även människor som är involverade i Dark Arts verkar inte typiskt kunna räkna ut den mörka Herren hade Horcruxes. Lucius Malfoy, som också skulle ha haft intresse för Dark Arts sedan han hade mörka föremål runt sin herrgård, fanns inte ut den dagbok han fick för att hålla och visste syftet med att vara en Horcrux - han trodde att det bara var "smart förtrollad", som Dumbledore sa.

“Of course, Lucius did not know what the diary really was. I understand that Voldemort had told him the diary would cause the Chamber of Secrets to reopen, because it was cleverly enchanted. Had Lucius known he held a portion of his master’s soul in his hands he would undoubtedly have treated it with more reverence – but instead he went ahead and carried out the old plan for his own ends: by planting the diary upon Arthur Weasley’s daughter, he hoped to discredit Arthur, have me thrown out of Hogwarts and get rid of a highly incriminating object in one stroke.”

Att bara vara kunnig om Dark Arts betyder inte att någon kommer nödvändigtvis veta om Horcruxes. Tom Riddle upptäckte sannolikt dem från böcker som vid en tidpunkt hölls i Hogwarts bibliotek, men senare avlägsnades och dolde bort av Dumbledore.

“Well,’ said Hermione, ‘I’ve been researching that.’

‘How?’ asked Harry. ‘I didn’t think there were any books on Horcruxes in the library?’

‘There weren’t,’ said Hermione, who had turned pink. ‘Dumbledore removed them all, but he – he didn’t destroy them.”

Hermione misstänker att Tom Riddle lärde sig allt han behövde veta om Horcruxes från de böcker som hon tycker kan ha varit i biblioteket tills Dumbledore blev rektor.

“This is the one that gives explicit instructions on how to make a Horcrux. Secrets of the Darkest Art – it’s a horrible book, really awful, full of evil magic. I wonder when Dumbledore removed it from the library … if he didn’t do it until he was Headmaster, I bet Voldemort got all the instruction he needed from here.”

Slughorn kunde också ha lärt sig om Horcruxes från dessa böcker, eftersom han var lärare vid Hogwarts innan Dumbledore blev rektor. Men vi vet att Dumbledore blev rektor innan Snape började delta i Hogwarts eftersom han var den som arrangerade Remus Lupine (som var i Snape år) att delta i Hogwarts trots att han var varulv. Eftersom Dumbledore redan var huvudansvarig, skulle böckerna om Horcruxes på Hogwarts-biblioteket nästan säkert ha tagits bort innan Snape kunde läsa dem.

Snape slutade sannolikt att studera Dark Arts när han bytte sida.

Även om Snape fascinerades av Dark Arts under sina tonåren fortsatte han sannolikt inte med att studera dem i sitt senare liv. Han drog till Dumbledore när den mörka herren valde att gå efter Lily och hade varit lojal mot honom sedan dess. Snart efter det gav Dumbledore honom en läropost vid Hogwarts. Det är osannolikt att Dumbledore skulle godkänna att han fortsatte att studera Dark Arts, så han skulle nog inte ha studerat dem (åtminstone inte lika mycket) efter att ha lämnat Death Eaters. Lily dog vid 21 år och han var omkring sin ålder, så han skulle ha bytt sida vid cirka 20, vilket innebär att han troligtvis gav upp att studera Dark Arts på samma tid.

Det betyder att han troligtvis slutat studera Dark Arts bara några år efter att ha examinerat från Hogwarts. Därför verkar det ännu mindre sannolikt att han skulle veta om Horcruxes. Även Death Eaters som skulle ha fortsatt engagemang i Dark Arts visste inte om Horcruxes. Snape, som ändrade sidor att arbeta med Dumbledore, en man som misshandlade Dark magic och förmodligen inte skulle vilja att han fortsatte att studera det, skulle ha ännu mindre möjlighet att eventuellt lära sig om Horcruxes. Det enda sättet han troligen skulle kunna få reda på om Horcruxes efter att ha bytt sida var om Dumbledore berättade för dem om dem, vilket han inte gjorde.
