Som vi känner till, var Saruman en Maiar och Istari, och var en student i Manwë, och är visad att vara klok om inte klokare än resten av Maiar Posse, min fråga är vad skulle Valaren göra till Saruman om de fick reda på om han hade förrått dem?
Detta anges aldrig uttryckligen i texten, men jag säger det av två anledningar:
Istari verkar ha fått en hög grad av självständighet i hur de förföljer sitt uppdrag. I uppsatsen The Istari skriver Tolkien (djärv är min betoning, italix är hans):
Now these Maiar were sent by the Valar at a crucial moment in the history of Middle-earth to enhance the resistance of the Elves of the West, greatly outnumbered by those of the East and South. It may be seen that they were free each to do what they could in this mission; that they were not commanded or supposed to act together as a small central body of power and wisdom

Det verkar inte vara mycket som kan dölja Manwës syn. Morgoths mönster kan göra det, men det finns inte så många av dem i tredje åldern. Med tanke på att Valaren visste nog att skicka Istari i första hand, föreställer jag mig att de håller ögonen på dem.
Men ändå slås Saruman inte ner för att misslyckas med sitt uppdrag. Om Valaren skulle göra något, förmodligen skulle de ha.
Jag sa att Valaren skulle göra ingenting, vilket är en förenkling. De gjorde faktiskt något: de förbannade honom från Aman. Detta framgår tydligt av Sarumans dödsplats i Konungens återkomst :
[S]uddenly Wormtongue rose up, drawing a hidden knife, and then with a snarl like a dog he sprang on Saruman’s back, jerked his head back, cut his throat, and with a yell ran off down the lane. Before Frodo could recover or speak a word, three hobbit-bows twanged and Wormtongue fell dead.
To the dismay of those that stood by, about the body of Saruman a grey mist gathered, and rising slowly to a great height like smoke from a fire, as a pale shrouded figure it loomed over the Hill. For a moment it wavered, looking to the West; but out of the West came a cold wind, and it bent away, and with a sigh dissolved into nothing.

Så Valaren gjorde någonting åt honom: de bosatte sig i sitt öde, vilket är detsamma som Sauron satte sig för sig själv.
1 Detta är en förenkling, som den senare halvan av mitt svar visar klart. för rekordet överväger jag inte Gandalfs förnyade auktoritet att vara något de gör "till" Saruman. För en sak var det Erus beslut snarare än Valarens. För en annan tycker jag att OP-modellen undrar om det faktiska straffet, och jag ser på att höja Gandalf för att vara ett sista dunkelt försök att rädda Istari-syftet, snarare än att straffa de som hade försvunnit. YMMV.
