Det är väl medvetet att Orcs, Golbins, Uruk-hai och de flesta Saurons styrkor inte tolererar ljus, särskilt solljus mycket bra, och vissa typer av trollar vänder sig till sten när solljuset faller på dem.
En av Uruk-hais bästa kännegenskaper är deras förmåga att bättre motstå solljus än Orcs eller Goblins.

Solstrålen verkade ha mer psykologisk effekt på orkerna, precis som Mordors dyster deprimerade moralen av alla män som kom dit. Många gånger genom Silmarillion-orkerna kämpar i solljuset, drivas av antingen hat av sina fiender eller rädsla för sina mörka mästare.
På så vis hatar de ljuset och vill helst inte vara i det, men när de tvingas, kan de resa och slåss normalt. Then the whole company began to run with the long loping strides of Orcs. They kept no order, thrusting, jostling, and cursing; yet their speed was very great. Each hobbit had a guard of three. Pippin was far back in the line. He wondered how long he would be able to go on at this pace: he had had no food since the morning. One of his guards had a whip. But at present the orc-liquor was still hot in him. His wits, too, were wide-awake.
