Apparitionen är extremt svår och många guider gör det inte.

Apparition är en av de mer riskfyllda formerna av magisk transport, mer än kvastar eller Floo-pulver. Apparater bär risken för Splinching, och både regelbundna och Side-Along Apparition orsakar en obehaglig känsla i guiderna som transporteras på detta sätt.

“They left half of themselves behind,’ said Mr Weasley, now spooning large amounts of treacle onto his porridge. ‘So, of course, they were stuck. Couldn’t move either way. Had to wait for the Accidental Magic Reversal Squad to sort them out. Meant a fair old bit of paperwork, I can tell you, what with the Muggles who spotted the body parts they’d left behind …’

Harry had a sudden vision of a pair of legs and an eyeball lying abandoned on the pavement of Privet Drive. ‘Were they OK?’ he asked, startled.

‘Oh yes,’ said Mr Weasley matter-of-factly. ‘But they got a heavy fine, and I don’t think they’ll be trying it again in a hurry. You don’t mess around with Apparition. There are plenty of adult wizards who don’t bother with it. Prefer brooms – slower, but safer.”

Arthur Weasley beskriver Apparation som något som inte ska vara röra med, och säger att många trollkarlar föredrar bromsarnas säkerhet istället. Förmodligen skulle de flesta trollkarlarna vara ännu mer försiktiga när de reser med minderåriga barn än de skulle vara ensamma, så det är troligt att de flesta trollkarlar inte vill riskera sida vid sida med sina barn eller barn de bryr sig om .

Harry vid sexton reagerar illa på att Dumbledore transporterar honom av Apparition.

“Harry felt Dumbledore’s arm twist away from him and redoubled his grip: the next thing he knew, everything went black; he was being pressed very hard from all directions; he could not breathe, there were iron bands tightening around his chest; his eyeballs were being forced back into his head; his eardrums were being pushed deeper into his skull, and then – He gulped great lungfuls of cold night air and opened his streaming eyes. He felt as though he had just been forced through a very tight rubber tube. It was a few seconds before he realised that Privet Drive had vanished. He and Dumbledore were now standing in what appeared to be a deserted village square, in the centre of which stood an old war memorial and a few benches. His comprehension catching up with his senses, Harry realised that he had just Apparated for the first time in his life.”

Dumbledore var en skicklig nog trollkarl, där han inte oavsiktligt skulle skada Harry, och Harry är gammal nog för att förstå vad som händer, men Harry känner sig inte särskilt bra efter sin erfarenhet. Harry säger att han föredrar brooms efter den erfarenheten.

Dessutom blir Ron hård Splinched när Hermione försöker Sid-Along Apparate med honom.

“Splinched,’ said Hermione, her fingers already busy at Ron’s sleeve, where the blood was wettest and darkest.

Harry watched, horrified, as she tore open Ron’s shirt. He had always thought of Splinching as something comical, but this … his insides crawled unpleasantly as Hermione laid bare Ron’s upper arm, where a great chunk of flesh was missing, scooped cleanly away as though by a knife.”

Ron är i smärta, saknar kött, och måste ha ditt ansikte på sina sår. I denna speciella händelse behövde de fly undan snabbt, men i situationer som är mindre dystra är det lätt att se varför guider inte riskerar att få detta att hända.

För den genomsnittliga wizardingfamiljens transportbehov är det troligen tillräckligt med bröst och kommer med mindre risk och obehag än Apparition.

Dessutom kräver Apparating någonstans vanligtvis att kunna tydligt visualisera den platsen.

Apparitionens steg kräver vanligtvis att trollkarlen tydligt kan visa den plats de försöker att göra. Först måste de bilda sin destination.

“Step one: fix your mind firmly upon the desired destination,’ said Twycross. ‘In this case, the interior of your hoop. Kindly concentrate upon that destination now.”

Då måste de koncentrera sig på att försöka ta upp det utrymme de ser på.

“Step two,’ said Twycross, ‘focus your determination to occupy the visualised space! Let your yearning to enter it flood from your mind to every particle of your body!”

Förmodligen kan de kanske inte uppträda någonstans om de inte kan visualisera det tillräckligt. Så till exempel, trollkarlar som inte har varit på arenan hölls Quidditch World Cup och kan inte visualisera att det inte skulle kunna visa sig där. Det finns dock fall där trollkarlar verkar vara Apparate någonstans som de aldrig sett tidigare, som Bellatrix är i stånd att Apparate to Snape's house, men hon är förvånad över var den är och hur den ser ut, så det är inte alltid nödvändigt att ha tidigare besökt.

Det är dock inte olagligt att transportera en underordnad guide på så sätt.

Ministeriet rekommenderar det som ett sätt att ta bort undervisningsguider från fara, som de inte skulle göra om de hade gjort det olagligt.

“Review the security arrangements around your house, making sure that all family members are aware of emergency measures such as Shield and Disillusionment Charms and, in the case of under-age family members, Side-Along-Apparition.”

Dessutom transporterar Dumbledore Harry så här innan han är sjutton.

“You have not, of course, passed your Apparition test?’ he said.

‘No,’ said Harry. ‘I thought you had to be seventeen?’

‘You do,’ said Dumbledore. ‘So you will need to hold on to my arm very tightly. My left, if you don’t mind – as you have noticed, my wand arm is a little fragile at the moment.”
