Så jag antog alltid alltid att splittring av en så kort bok i tre filmer var ett pengar-grubbande drag, och uppriktigt sagt skulle jag inte bli helt förvånad om det var åtminstone en del av anledningen till att The Hobbit delades upp i tre filmer. Men jag undrade ... vet någon om en alternativ (eller ytterligare / djupare) förklaring till varför Peter Jackson bestämde sig för att dela upp The Hobbit i tre filmer?
Att gå tillbaka till produktionshistoriken, så långt tillbaka som 2006, ville MGM och Jackson göra det till en tredelig franchise på något sätt. Enligt Wikipedia :
The project had been envisaged as two parts since 2006, but the proposed contents of the parts changed during development. MGM expressed interest in a second film in 2006, set between The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. Jackson concurred, stating that "one of the drawbacks of The Hobbit is its relatively light weight compared to [Lord of the Rings]... There's a lot of sections in which a character like Gandalf disappears for a while. – he references going off to meet with the White Council, who are actually characters like Galadriel and Saruman and people that we see in Lord of the Rings. He mysteriously vanishes for a while and then comes back, but we don't really know what goes on." Jackson was also interested in showing Gollum's journey to Mordor and Aragorn setting a watch on the Shire.
Mellan 2006 och Jackson kom till 2010, Guillermo del Toro tappades för att styra och hantera skärmspelet. Sammanfattningsvis kände han att historien bara borde rita på vad som tillhandahölls i både The Hobbit och The Lord of the Rings, men hade en bit av en kamp för att ta reda på var man skulle dela upp historien i två filmer, till och med gå så långt som att de skulle säga att de skulle bara filma allt i en singel, tempofylld film om ingenting fungerade för att dela upp det i två. Del Toro var definitivt mot att ha någon form av "brofilm", ganska starkt faktiskt. Han citerades i samma Wikipedia artikel:
when you lay out the cards fro [sic] the story beats contained within the book (before even considering any apendix [sic] material) the work is enormous and encompasses more than one film. That's why we are thinking of the two instalments as parts of a single narrative. That's why I keep putting down the use of a "bridge" film (posited initially). I think the concept as such is not relevant any more. I believe that the narrative and characters are rich enough to fit in two films.
Del Toro skulle dock avvika formproduktionen under 2010 på grund av förseningar, och Jackson skulle snart bli tappad för att komma tillbaka och styra The Hobbit.
Efter att ha spelat in på den ursprungliga tv-filialen, bekräftade Jackson att det skulle bli fleshed ut i en film med tre filmer, med hjälp av bilagor som Tokein skrev för att utöka historien om Middle Earth.
Övergripande skulle jag inte säga att det var helt ett beslut baserat på att tjäna mer pengar, men en som en hel del personer ville hända i själva verket på ett eller annat sätt.
