Långt svar:
För att veta hur elven lyckades känna Sauron måste vi förstå hur One Ring fungerar. Det som följer är spekulativt, eftersom vi inte har något bestämt svar.
Låt oss först tala om Ósanwe. Osanwe betyder "kommunikation av tanke" i quenya.Tolkien skrev en åtta sidessats om den heter Ósanwe-kenta . Observera att berättaren inte är Tolkien utan en elvish loremaster.
Vad är Osanwe?
För att vara väldigt förenklad är det telepati. Det tillåter att skicka tankar till ett annat sinne och läsa andra sinnen.

Morgoths perversion av Ósanwe
Då bestämde Morgoth (och sedan Sauron) att perverdera Ósanwe och att implantera sina egna tankar i andras tankar. Men krävs det fortfarande samtycke :

And for that reason it was said above that the distinction of openness and active will to entertain was of great importance. For he would come by stealth to a mind open and unwary, hoping to learn some part of its thought before it closed, and still more to implant in it his own thought, to deceive it and win it to his friendship.

The One Ring

Vad var en kraft i Ring:
“he could see and govern the very thoughts of those that wore them [the lesser rings].
Det verkar mycket troligt att One Ring gjorde Ósanwe mycket lättare mellan ringbärare, vilket ger Sauron en bakdörr för att kontrollera dem.
Men samtycke krävs. Alltid, genom Erus vilja. Morgoth själv kunde inte läsa en hobbits sinne om han var ovillig.
Så när Sauron satte Ringen, var alla bärare tvungna att samtycka (eller åtminstone ingen aktivt vägra honom). Elvor hade en stor fördel, eftersom de förstod Ósanwe och redan hade övat det. Så de kände Saurons närvaro i sitt sinne, förstod vad det var och avvisade honom.
