Måste läsa detta minst 30 år sedan. Protagonisten drogs till en viss plats, som många andra människor, att delta i något meningslöst krig. Förmodligen var den okända fienden andra som också påverkades på samma sätt men på motsatt sida. Detta händer några år tror jag. Också ihåg ett panslat landtåg under striden.
Huvudpersonen möter andra som också fått "samtalet" på ett värdshus, och nästa dag går de och slåss. Jag tror att huvudpersonen blev sårad och avskedad i landtåget medan den sköljdes av artilleri. Historien är inte explicit om var och när den äger rum.
Enligt OP-kommentaren ovan var detta sannolikt Ut ur munen av draken (2003) av Mark Geston.
