Jag kommer ihåg att läsa en novell på internet om ett år sedan (även om berättelsen var lite äldre) som antagligen var en 10 minuters läsning.
Det var skrivet ur en doktors perspektiv som kom ihåg hur han utvecklade en bot som skulle hindra människor från åldrande (tror jag). Han trodde att han var ett geni och beskrivs med några medicinska termer där ett specialiserat virus skulle implanteras för att stoppa åldringsprocessen. Jag tycker att det var någonstans i nacken.
Han beskrev hur han visade andra forskare sitt arbete och hur det skulle revolutionera världen - men de vände sig ner och sa att det behövde testas först. Den vanliga processen att testa med olika djur innan man testar med människor innan man gör ett patent ...
Det var för länge för huvudpersonen. Han hoppade över några tester och gick direkt från möss till män. Problemet var att något utvecklades.
Slutet av berättelsen var att människorna utvecklade en smak för mänskligt kött och liknande egenskaper som du normalt ser i zombieapokalypscenarier.
Berättelsen var fascinerande eftersom du bara insåg att det handlade om en zombieapokalyps strax före slutet av den. Och professorn var ganska full av sig själv och beskrev alltid hur detta var bara ett mindre bakslag.

Han testade på djur:
I tested on cats, dogs, and eventually monkeys.
Men han hade ett problem med myndigheterna:
But the FDA was the next step. After animal trials comes human trials. First with a tiny control group, then with larger and larger groups and so on. Getting a drug through the FDA can take ten years and that simply wouldn’t do.
Han var för utålmodig:
I was 57 years old at that point. Waiting another ten years would make me 67. Then, it would take at least another five to ten years before the Nobel committee recognized my genius and awarded me the prize I so richly deserve. There was a chance I wouldn’t live to reap my due fame! [...] No, the FDA was an impediment. It was time to act.
Så tog han den korta vägen:
I released the virus in several major population areas all over the world.
Det finns en viss bieffekt som han inte har redovisat:
It turns out that the higher cognition centers of the brain have a slightly different blood-brain barrier setup. My compound, while transitioning into those parts of the brain, changes slightly due to the barrier and ends up malfunctioning.
Zombies (nu ganska uppenbart):
In any event, it caused people to slowly lose their higher cognition abilities. They retained motor control, sensory input, fight or flight reflex, etc. But they lost their ability to “think”.
Djurförsök skulle inte ha hjälpt, oavsett hur mycket han testat:
Cats, dogs, and monkeys don’t have that part of the brain at all.
Stor humor om du frågar mig:
Some could argue this is my fault, but that’s absurd. Clearly the FDA is at fault. If it weren’t for their slow process, I wouldn’t have been forced to distribute the compound like I did.
