Var det några demokratier i Mellanöstern?

Det mest uppenbara exemplet enligt min uppfattning, och det enda som nämns i Hobbit är Mästare i Lake Town (Esgaroth på Long Lake).

In the Laketown we have always elected masters from among the old and wise, and have not endured the rule of mere fighting men.

Den utökade diskussionen om Shire kommunstyrning kommer inte fram till Ringenes Herre . Pedantiskt var Shire fortfarande en del av riket av Arnor, så inte en sann republik.

När jag skriver frågan kom svaret till mitt minne.

Ents verkade vara ganska demokratisk (till synes verging i anarkist i vardagen) - de hade ett råd ( Entmoot ) där Beslut om huruvida man ska gå i krig gjordes. De hade respekterat ledare men tydligen ingen monark att fatta beslut - även Treebeard var tvungen att övertyga andra Ents, trots att den enda "äldre" kvar som var aktiv.

... Still, I daresay I could get together a fair company of our younger folks – if I could make them understand the need: if I could rouse them: we are not a hasty folk. What a pity there are so few of us!'

... 'Hoo, eh? Entmoot?' said Treebeard, turning round. 'It is not a place, it is a gathering of Ents – which does not often happen nowadays. But I have managed to make a fair number promise to come. We shall meet in the place where we have always met: Derndingle Men call it. It is away south from here. We must be there before noon.'

Och det var mycket tydligt att de beslutade, alla tillsammans:

Shire är ganska mycket en representativ demokrati (eller kanske en konstitutionell halvmonarki), så länge som det har någon regering alls. Prolet till Ringenes Herre säger:

The Thain [an inherited office] was the master of the Shire-moot, and captain of the Shire-muster and the Hobbitry-in-arms, but as muster and moot were only held in times of emergency, which no longer occurred, the Thainship had ceased to be more than a nominal dignity. ...

The only real official in the Shire at this date was the Mayor of Michel Delving (or of the Shire), who was elected every seven years at the Free Fair on the White Downs at the Lithe, that is at Mid-summer. As mayor almost his only duty was to preside at banquets, given on the Shire-holidays, which occurred at frequent intervals. But the offices of Postmaster and First Shirriff were attached to the mayoralty, so that he managed both the Messenger Service and the Watch. These were the only Shire-services, and the Messengers were the most numerous, and much the busier of the two.

Tolkien var väldigt komplett i sin värld, omsorgsfullt att täcka alla detaljer för att nå en mycket varierad erfarenhet. I regeringstyperna kan man finna ren anarki, som trollarna, kungarier som männenes rike, "kommunism" från orker och även demokratier. Skytten är en liten demokrati där de har borgmästare (de är för ödmjuka i sina enkla liv för att ha en djupare regering). Entsna passar knappt på en demokrati, de har alla sina folk att välja, passar på ett demokratiskt parlament där varje medlem av rådet har samma värde, och deras beslut påverkar också deras kusiner, Huorns. Mages själva med sitt råd har hela gruppen bestämmer vad som är bäst för hela stället.
