I Kongens återkomst , Halbarad och minst två dussin andra Rangers of the North kommer till Aragorns hjälp. Halbarad, och eventuellt några andra, dör i slaget vid Pelennor-fälten, och det är möjligt att fler kan ha dött i slaget vid Morannon.
Senare när Gandalf och hobbitsna återvänder till Bree, Butterbur hämtar gästgivaren Rangers avgång, vilket lett till en betydande försämring av levnadsvillkoren i hela regionen. Gamdalf bekvämligheter Butterbur genom att säga att Rangers har återvänt till området, ridning med sig själv och hobbitsna.
Men hobbiterna är de enda som rider med Gandalf, så det verkar som om Gandalf hänvisar till hobbitsna.
Allt detta ledde mig till att undra vad som hände med Rangers efter kriget, var de gick och om de hade återvänt till norr före Gandalf och företag, varför de inte gjorde någonting om Sharkey och hans goons.Obs! You have been on the edge of very great troubles, and I am only glad to hear that you have not been deeper in. But better times are coming. Maybe, better than any you remember. The Rangers have returned. We came back with them. And there is a king again, Barliman. He will soon be turning his mind this way.
'Then the Greenway will be opened again, and his messengers will come north, and there will be comings and goings, and the evil things will be driven out of the waste-lands. Indeed the waste in time will be waste no longer, and there will be people and fields where once there was wilderness.'
Mr. Butterbur shook his head. 'If there's a few decent respectable folk on the roads, that won't do no harm,' he said. 'But we don't want no more rabble and ruffians. And we don't want no outsiders at Bree, nor near Bree at all. We want to be let alone. I don't want a whole crowd o' strangers camping here and settling there and tearing up the wild country.'
'You will be let alone, Barliman,' said Gandalf. 'There is room enough for realms between Isen and Greyflood, or along the shore lands south of the Brandywine, without any one living within many days' ride of Bree. And many folk used to dwell away north, a hundred miles or more from here, at the far end of the Greenway: on the North Downs or by Lake Evendim.'

Kort svar: vi vet inte. Vi vet från bilaga A att Aragorn återställer staden Annuminas efter kriget:
... when he [Aragorn] comes north to his house in Annuminas restored and stays for a while by Lake Evendim, then everyone in the Shire is glad.
I Homeward Bound antyder Gandalf att Aragorn också avser att återställa Fornost.
And the King will come there one day; and then you'll have some fine folk riding through.
Nu måste en del Dunedain redan ha levt åtminstone delvis bosatta liv; upprätthålla blodlinjen i sexton generationer skulle kräva en säker plats för barn att växa upp. Huvudmännen i Dunedain fostrades i Rivendell, men det finns inga bevis för att andra rangers växte upp där. Dessutom, i Aragorns och Arvens tal (Bilaga A) lämnar Aragorns mor Gilraen Rivendell och returnerar
to her own people in Eriador.
Sammanfattningsvis är det troligt att Dunedain återvände till sina förfäders hem när dessa återställdes. För alla som inte tyckte om stadslivet fanns det fortfarande orker i Misty Mountains att ta itu med, plus vargar, troll och förmodligen olika andra nasties som vi inte vet någonting om.
