Många av Asimovs science fiction romaner, antingen genom original design eller senare retconning, äger rum i samma delade universum. Mest framträdande i det universum finner vi Hari Seldons "Foundation" - men Roboternas romaner, Pebbles in the Sky, Space Currents och många andra äger rum i samma "delade univers".
Jag har aldrig kunnat bestämma om hans nya The Gods Themselves ska vara en del av detta samma universum - jag kan inte hitta något bevis på ett eller annat sätt.
Har någon sett några avsnitt i någon av romanen som skulle utesluta eller stödja denna roman som äger rum i samma delade universum?
I författarens anteckning i början av "Prelude to Foundation" skriver Asimov en kort kronologi för universum.
When I wrote "Foundation," which appeared in the May 1942 issue of Astounding Science Faction, I had no idea that I had begun a series of stories that would eventually grow into six volumes and a total of 650,000 words (so far). Nor did I have any idea that it would be unified with my series of short stories and novels involving robots and my novels involving the Galactic Empire for a grand total (so far) of fourteen volumes and a total of about 1,450,000 words.

Sedan "Foundation and Earth" (1983) skrevs efter "The Gods Themselves" (1972) tror jag att det här förmodligen är bra bevis mot "The Gods Themselves" som är avsedd som en del av serien.
Gudarna själva är klart bortsett från resten av Asimovs andra verk (ja, det och "Guld" ). Jag har ingen definitiv referens, men jag tror inte att Asimov ser allvarligt på att göra är en del av hans huvuduniversum.
Om du överväger tomten, skulle det vara svårt att förena: samhället borde vara robotiserat, och det borde inte finnas en blomstrande månebas, i kronologins historia.
Du noterar att ISFDB klassificerar Gudarna själva som en fristående roman (de klassificerar också End of Eternity som fristående, vilket är mer diskutabelt).
Förutom Asimovs lista över Robots / Empire / Foundation-böcker som inte inkluderar "The Gods Themselves" finns det också två punkter i böckerna själva som visar att "Gudar" ingår inte i Robots / Empire / Foundation kontinuitet.
För det första ... det finns inga robotar i "The Gods Themselves". I Robots historier som insamlade i "I, Robot" och "The Complete Robot" fanns robotar på jorden innan människor bosatte sig andra planeter i vårt solsystem och blev sedan förbjudna från jorden men fick arbeta på de andra planeterna. De är helt enkelt inte närvarande i "The Gods Themselves". De är inte närvarande, eller till och med nämnde, i den första sektionen, som är inställd på jorden. De är inte heller närvarande eller nämns i det tredje avsnittet, som är inställt på Luna (månen).
