Det uppenbara svaret skulle vara att den bokstavliga handlingen att se är inte nödvändig, snarare att det upplever någon död som är viktig.

Harry did not see his parents die. He was one year old and in a cot at the time. Although you never see that scene, I wrote it and then cut it. He didn’t see it; he was too young to appreciate it. When you find out about the Thestrals, you find that you can see them only when you really understand death in a broader sense, when you really know what it means.

Someone said that Harry saw Quirrell die, but that is not true. He was unconscious when Quirrell died, in Philosopher’s Stone. He did not know until he came around that Quirrell had died when Voldemort left his body.

Then you have Cedric. With Cedric, fair point. Harry had just seen Cedric die when he got back into the carriages to go back to Hogsmeade station. I thought about that at the end of Goblet, because I have known from the word go what was drawing the carriages. From Chamber of Secrets, in which there are carriages drawn by invisible things, I have known what was there. I decided that it would be an odd thing to do right at the end of a book. Anyone who has suffered a bereavement knows that there is the immediate shock but that it takes a little while to appreciate fully that you will never see that person again. Until that had happened, I did not think that Harry could see the Thestrals.

Harry såg inte när Cedric dödades, men det har aldrig sagts att att man faktiskt ser att personen dör var ett krav för att kunna se Thestrals, bara att personen måste "ha sett döden". Det är aldrig sagt att de måste se en död äger rum. Harry kan sägas ha sett döden - han tittar på Cedrics döda kropp, och även om han inte accepterade det han såg i det ögonblicket såg han igen att kroppen var livlös.

Det är aldrig klart vad "se döden" definieras som. Det nämns till exempel aldrig om en älskad dö och emotionellt behandlar den, men aldrig faktiskt sett den döda kroppen skulle räcka för att se Thestrals. Harry var dock närvarande vid Cedrics dödsfall, men han såg faktiskt inte så ser han och måste återvända till Cedrics kropp. Det borde räcka för att Harry har "sett döden".

Neville och Luna kunde också se Thestralsna, men det är oklart huruvida de faktiskt bevittnade ögonblicket deras nära och kära dött. Vi vet att Lunas mamma dog i en explosion när hon var nio, men vi vet inte om Luna faktiskt såg sin mamma dö - vi vet bara att hon beskrivit det som hemskt, vilket inte nödvändigtvis betyder att hon såg det. Det kan lika lätt betyda att Luna trodde att en explosion var ett hemskt sätt att dö, eller helt enkelt att det var hemskt att hennes mamma hade dött. Det finns ännu mindre information om hur Nevills farfar dog och om Neville faktiskt hade sett ögonblicket av sin död.
