Seeking vad jag tycker var en europeisk folktal

På 1980-talet hörde jag en inspelning av en berättelse (förmodligen på en LP) som antingen var en återförsäljning av en verklig europeisk folktal eller en modern historia som skrevs för att låta som en klassisk saga.

Jag kommer inte ihåg hur det började, men hjälten hamnar på något sätt skeppsbrott, men innan han drunknar blir han räddad av skurkens dotter, vilken är en sorts trollkung. (Han har ett riktigt namn, kanske börjar med H , men jag kommer inte ihåg det.) De två blir kär, och de plottar hur de kommer att kunna fly från sin pappa tillsammans. (De kan inte bara döda skurken, för att hans kropp är oskadlig, hans livskraft är dold bort någon annanstans.)

Deras plan är att hon ska hjälpa mannen att fly, där skurken inte visste att han ens hade besökt skurkens underjordiska rike. Då finner han på något sätt att han var in igen, som om han sökte någon form av hjälp från skurken. Men han gör en olägenhet av sig själv och skurkens palats och bryter saker. Så förklarar skurken att hjälten kommer att dödas, såvida han inte lyckas svara på fyra frågor.

Dock vet dottern vad de fyra frågorna kommer att vara i förväg:

  • Var är min dotter? Svar: I ett palats längst ner på havet.

  • Vilken av dessa är min dotter? Skurken teleporterar i hundratals identiska kvinnor, men den riktiga dottern gör en handsignal till hjälten så att han kan identifiera henne.

  • Var är mitt livskraft dolt? Svar: I hjärtat av en fisk i djuphavet.

  • Vilken av dessa fiskar innehåller mitt liv? Skurken teleporterar i hundratals identiska fiskar, men dottern, som fortfarande är närvarande, pekar ut den rätta, så hjälten kan skära sitt hjärta ut och skicka skurken.

Detta är en av Dänische Volksmärchen [ "Danska folkspråk" ] av Svend Grundtvig, publicerad 1878.

Det är känt för att förtjänar en referens i The Golden Bough ;

“Where is my daughter?” asked the sorcerer. EDIT: Ser ut att båda nedan är variationer på en saga som heter Trollens dotter , inkluderad av Andrew Lang i Pink Fairy Book . Från Wikipedia sammanfattning:

When he picked out his daughter, the maiden appeared and stayed by him; when he picked out the fish the maiden indicated, he cut it open and killed the troll.

He will also ask whether you can recognize her, and you must answer, 'Yes.' Then a large number of young women will be led past you in order that you may point out which one you take to be his daughter. As you might not recognize me, I shall nudge you as I pass, and you must immediately seize me and hold me fast. The wizard's next question will be, ' Where is my heart?' and you must again step forward and answer, 'It is in a fish.' He will then ask, 'Do you know this fish?' and you must again answer, 'Yes.' Then he will have all kinds of fish appear before you, and you will have to choose the right one from among them. But I will take good care to be by your side and when the right fish comes I will touch you gently, and you must seize him and quickly cut him open. Then the wizard will be discouraged and will ask you no more questions.
