En forskare upptäcker hyperspace (jag tror att han löser en teori som förklarar hur man når den, men jag är inte säker). Han kan emellertid inte få någon statlig myndighet att tro på honom och finansiera sin forskning. Dessutom finansierar myndigheter bråkiga andra FTL enheter med liten chans att lyckas.
Slutligen håller en regeringsrepresentant överens om att se forskaren. Regeringsrepresentanten förklarar att hyperspace redan löstes, men hastigheterna i hyperspace var långsammare , inte snabbare än de i normalt utrymme.
Jag läste detta mer än 10 år sedan och förmodligen mer som 20. Det var en novell, förmodligen i en antologibok.

He was right. It doesn’t. “I’m sorry, Kinery. Really I am. But Lopez gave us a hyperdrive thirty years ago. That’s when we discovered that the limiting velocity in hyperspace is not the speed of light. “It’s slower, Kinery. It’s slower.”
