Hemligheterna verkar vara tillgängliga endast för Qohorik smiths.

The properties of Valyrian steel are well-known, and are the result of both folding iron many times to balance and remove impurities, and the use of spells—or at least arts we do not know—to give unnatural strength to the resulting steel. Those arts are now lost, though the smiths of Qohor claim to still know magics for reworking Valyrian steel without losing its strength or unsurpassed ability to hold an edge.

Kanske är det helt enkelt konst / vetenskap om tillverkning av Valyrian-stål som gick förlorat, och en riktigt bra smed kan fortfarande arbeta med det. Jag kommer ihåg att läsa en bit av (kanske tvivelaktigt kanon) lore som sa att produktionen av Valyrian-stål involverade användningen av magi. Det skulle verkligen minska antalet personer som kan göra Valyrian-stål i de sju kungadömena, eftersom det finns få få personer som kunde veta tillräckligt om magi för att göra detta (de olika följeslagarna av ljusets Herre, och kanske ett par mästare) och ingen av dem är vanliga (eller speciellt sannolikt att bli professionella smeder).

Det här är inte ett svårt svar. Jag tror inte att det någonsin uttryckligen anges hur det var gjort, eller att Valyrian-stål var faktiskt omöjligt att göra, men min bokkunskap är inte tillräckligt bra för att bekräfta eller förneka något av detta.
