Jag vet att Dumbledore kan ha ansett Voldemorts förflutna som föräldralös och hans verksamhet som misstänksam. Dumbledore har kanske gissat att Voldemort associerade mobbning av barn som Voldemorts första triumf över Muggles. Men hur upptäckte Dumbledore grottan? Han kunde inte ha gått tillbaka till barnhemmet eftersom barnhemmet rivits och ersatt av en kontorsbyggnad.
Mrs. Cole på barnhemmet släppte att det fanns en havgrotta nära var föräldralösa på sommarlovetL:
‘But I’m jiggered if I know how he got up there to do it. All I know is he and Billy had argued the day before. And then –’ Mrs Cole took another swig of gin, slopping a little over her chin this time, ‘on the summer outing – we take them out, you know, once a year, to the countryside or to the seaside – well, Amy Benson and Dennis Bishop were never quite right afterwards, and all we ever got out of them was that they’d gone into a cave with Tom Riddle. He swore they’d just gone exploring, but something happened in there, I’m sure of it. And, well, there have been a lot of things, funny things ...’
She looked at Dumbledore again, and though her cheeks were flushed, her gaze was steady.

Dumbledore tillbringade mycket av Half-Blood Prince och letade efter Horcruxes. Att veta Tom Riddle hade använt en havgrotta för att skrämma sina medföräldrar gav honom en aning att åtminstone börja leta efter lämpliga havgrottor. Och så småningom hittade han den rätta:
‘Lumos,’ said Dumbledore, as he reached the boulder closest to the cliff face. A thousand flecks of golden light sparkled upon the dark surface of the water a few feet below where he crouched; the black wall of rock beside him was illuminated too.
‘You see?’ said Dumbledore quietly, holding his wand a little higher.
Harry saw a fissure in the cliff into which dark water was swirling.

Det här är när Dumbledore och Harry hittar havgrottan. Dumbledore känner också att grottan har känt magi och bestämmer att Tom Riddle en gång var där.

Dumbledore letade efter det ganska länge (se mitt tredje citat där han säger det rakt ut); han hade ledtrådar om att det är generellt sett från sina ursprungliga intervjuer på barnhemmet, men inte mycket specifika.

Dumbledore refererar det kort efter:
The little stories of the strangled rabbit and the young boy and girl he lured into a cave were most suggestive. … ‘I can make them hurt if I want to. …’ ”
Då visar han senare att han har hittat den efter mycket sökning:
“Which Horcrux is it? Where is it?”
“I am not sure which it is — though I think we can rule out the snake — but I believe it to be hidden in a cave on the coast many miles from here, a cave I have been trying to locate for a very long time: the cave in which Tom Riddle once terrorized two children from his orphanage on their annual trip; you remember?”
Han har sannolikt funnit det genom att undersöka var barnen åkte på utflykter och sedan söka därifrån för platser som skulle ha varit logiska förlängningar av resorna samt att passa in i beskrivningen:
Hans forskningsmetoder visas aldrig direkt på kamera, men vi har sett att han använder ett antal taktik för att hitta annan information (till exempel andra Horcruxes.) Även om barnhemmet brändes, fanns det många källor till data han kunde ha nått, eftersom han visste ungefär vad han letade efter - centraliserade poster, minnen från andra som arbetade eller bodde där osv.“They brought the kids from the orphanage here?” asked Harry, who could not imagine a less cozy spot for a day trip.
“Not here, precisely,” said Dumbledore. “There is a village of sorts about halfway along the cliffs behind us. I believe the orphans were taken there for a little sea air and a view of the waves.
Dumbledores upptäckten av grottan berodde på att han hörde historien om att Tom tar barn ner till en grotta. Dumbledore har visat att han har ett utmärkt minne så kom ihåg det är ett icke-problem. Så när du letade efter Horrocrux dumbledore gick du troligen till barnhemmet först och fann att det inte längre var där, fortsatte att gå till nästa bästa plats, grottan. Dumbledore visar också att han kan känna sig magisk något som ingen annan trollkarl har visat göra (andra då antagligen Voldemort sedan han satt upp grottan) så när han hittat grottan var det enkelt att inse att det var faktiskt den korrekta grottan.
