Efter Harry & vänner razzerade Lestrange's Gringotts valv och tog Hufflepuffs cup. När Voldemort upptäckte, dödade han allt som levererade meddelandet i Gringotts.

What did you say to me?" His voice was high and cold, but fury and fear burned inside him. The one thing that he had dreaded, but it could not be true, he could not see how...

The goblin was trembling, unable to meet the red eyes high above his.

"Say it again!" murmured Voldemort. "Say it again!"

"M-my Lord," stammered the goblin, its black eyes wide with terror, "m-my Lord... we t-tried to st-stop them... Im-impostors, my Lord... broke -broke into the Lestranges' vault..."

"Impostors? What impostors? I thought Gringotts had ways of revealing impostors? Who were they?"

"It was... it was... the P-Potter b-boy and the t-two accomplices..."

"And they took?" he said, his voice rising, a terrible fear gripping him, "Tell me! What did they take?"

"A... a s-small golden c-cup m-my Lord..."

The scream of rage, of denial left him as if it were a stranger's. He was crazed, frenzied, it could not be true, it was impossible, nobody had known. How was it possible that the boy could have discovered his secret?

Han insåg det om att lära sig koppen var borta, den 1 maj 1998.

Den mörka Herren insåg att det var möjligt att Harry hade känt om Horcruxes när han lärde sig att Helga Hufflepuffs kopp hade blivit stulen ut ur valvet den var kvar i.

Detta hände en dag före den sista striden, vilken J.K. Rowling har sagt ägde rum den 2 maj.

Året skulle vara 1998, som det nämns i "Harry Potter och Secrets Chamber", att nästan Headless Nick hade varit ett spöke i femhundra år, eftersom det är hans femhundradedelade dödsdag.

Det skulle göra att Harry's andra år av Hogwarts ägde rum mellan 1992 och 1993, så de år som de slutliga böckerna skulle ställas in skulle vara 1997 till 1998, så slaget ägde rum 1998. Därför började den mörka herren misstänker att Harry visste om Horcruxes den 1 maj 1998.

När Harry, Hermione och Ron reste till Gringotts för att stjäla Horcrux från Lestranges valv. Gruppen hade ingen anledning att vara i Lestranges valv om de inte visste om Horcrux, så Voldemort räknade lätt ut sina avsikter.
